WINNIPEG - A former National Hockey League player who now sits on Winnipeg city council is facing an assault charge. Thomas Steen has not yet been formally charged, but turned himself into police and was released on a promise to appear. Fellow councillor Scott Fielding confirms a media report that Steen is alleged to have assaulted a woman he knows at a restaurant last week. Fielding says Steen is no longer sitting on the Winnipeg Police Board — a civilian group that oversees the citys police force. Steen has not been available for comment, but has issued a one-line written statement in which he says he is — quote — "taking some time to deal with a private personal matter." Steen, who is 53, played 14 seasons as a forward with the Winnipeg Jets and retired in 1995. He was elected to Winnipeg city council in 2010. Police will only say that a 53-year-old man turned himself in Tuesday and is facing assault charges. There is no word yet on when Steen is to appear in court. Puig turned a slow bouncer past the Mets diving shortstop into a one-out double before Gonzalezs double -- his third hit of the game and seventh career walk-off RBI. Thats pretty amazing what happened right there." The Dodgers werent done yet. "Every time I leave the plate Im always thinking for second," Puig said through a translator. Puig raced to pick up the ball and fired to third base to nail Marlon Byrd. Hawkins got hit in the groin on a comebacker by Jerry Hairston Jr. in the ninth, but he stayed in the game after a brief pause. "It was a direct hit. No cup," he said. "Ive never worn a cup in my life, but I might have to start. I felt like I got kicked by a mule. It hurts." Byrd hit a three-run homer on a 3-0 pitch from Chris Capuano in the third, extending New Yorks lead to 4-0. Capuano gave up three consecutive one-out hits, including singles by Daniel Murphy and Josh Satin before Byrd connected.
