ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel has a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee that will not require surgery but will sideline him at least two weeks and potentially longer, coach Doug Marrone said Friday. Manuel was injured in the third quarter of Buffalos 37-24 loss at Cleveland on Thursday, when he was hit by Browns safety Tashaun Gipson at the end of a 14-yard run. Marrone said it is too early to determine an exact timetable for Manuels return. "What we need right now is for it to calm down, see where were at," Marrone said, "see where hes at in probably a week to see how its progressing, where he is, then get it down in to a little bit more of a window." Rookie Jeff Tuel came in for Manuel but was ineffective, completing 8 of 20 passes for 80 yards. Marrone said the Bills (2-3) will look into acquiring another quarterback and did not rule out the possibility of that player starting Buffalos next game Oct. 13 at Cincinnati (2-2). Manuel had already gained a first down on the play on which he was hurt, but Marrone defended the quarterbacks decision not to slide. "This one (Thursday) night was a tough situation because I really dont think he saw the guy coming to the inside until late," Marrone said. "You see him get the first down and you see him trying to get as much as you can and then try to protect himself." After hitting Manuel, Gipson pumped his fist and stared in the direction of the quarterback on the ground. Bills centre Eric Wood called some Browns players "classless" for the way they reacted to Manuels injury. "The hit was fine," Wood said. "What ticked me off was the way they acted afterwards. I hope our defence never acts like that when they injure an opposing quarterback because youve got to show some class in that situation. "Theres a few guys over there that obviously didnt." Wood singled out Browns safety T.J. Ward, claiming he told Bills rookie linebacker Kiko Alonso, Wards former teammate at Oregon, that he should have warned Manuel that Clevelands defence was coming after him. "That is completely inaccurate," Ward said on a conference call. "I did speak to Kiko and he went to Oregon with me. But anytime a player gets hurt, you never praise or root for players to get hurt. Its competitive sport, a violent sport, but when you see players go down, no way in any shape or form its a celebration." In the first quarter, Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer suffered what ended up being a season-ending knee injury when he got his leg caught underneath him in a slide and was hit near the head by Alonso. Several Browns wanted a penalty called on the hit. "I dont think there was any intention there," Cleveland coach Rob Chudzinski said. "Brian was sliding. It was just an unfortunate thing. I think his cleat got caught up underneath him." This is the second time Manuel has been out with a knee injury. He missed the final two weeks of the preseason after hurting his left knee while scrambling in a win over Minnesota on Aug. 16. Kevin Kolb started the following weekend at Washington, but sustained a season-ending concussion during that game. The Bills were forced to scramble to address their depth at quarterback by signing free agent Matt Leinart and acquiring Thaddeus Lewis in a trade with Detroit. Leinart was cut a day after the Bills preseason finale vs. Detroit. Lewis was cut a day later before being re-signed to Buffalos practice squad. The Bills are banged up at other positions, but an extra weekend of rest will help them recover. Leading receiver Stevie Johnson has a strained back muscle that is not expected to keep him out of action, Marrone said. Johnson left Thursdays game in the second quarter and did not return. He sat out most of spring practices with a back injury. Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd (plantar fasciitis) and starting cornerback Stephon Gilmore (wrist) will both practice this week, Marrone said, and the Bills are hopeful one or both players will be able to make his regular-season debut against Cincinnati. Cornerback Ron Brooks (foot), wide receiver Marquise Goodwin (hand) and kicker Dustin Hopkins (groin) are also close to returning, Marrone said. "Its part of the game to lose guys, lose games," running back Fred Jackson said. "Youve got to come back and respond. Weve got a good, extended period before our next game so hopefully we can get some guys back from injuries and do what weve got to do to hit the ground running when we get to the next game." Buffalo released punter Shawn Powell on Friday after he finished with 23.1 yards-per-punt net against Cleveland and failed to land one inside the Browns 20. Powell also struggled with angling punts away from Clevelands Travis Benjamin, who returned seven punts for a franchise-record 179 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown return. Nic Petan Jersey . J.J. Hardy drove in a run for the Orioles, who bounced back from an 8-4 loss in the series opener on Friday. Fresh off the 15-day disabled list, Derrek Lee went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jake Arrieta (7-3) gave up three runs on five hits over six innings to pick up the win. JOE JOHNSON (Nets): If I had to pick the guy that was the MVP on this Series, No doubt in my mind it was him. Forget his numbers for a second which were impressive to say the least. It had more to do with his presence and the inability for the Raptors to find a viable/consistent solution to overcome his vast talents. Bottom line, hes a very difficult cover and his strength, post skills, passing ability, creativity off the bounce and distance shooting make him a fascinating and gifted offensive player. Give him credit, He took on all the challenges and made the adjustments and was the difference in this series. 2. STATEMENT: Thanks again! You - the fans have made a wonderful statement across the North American sports landscape and in the NBA community that Toronto and the country of Canada is a growing and vibrant hoops hotbed and will be heard from for generations to come. Cant tell you the impression its made on folks all across the NBA. Utterly remarkable to say the least. Great Opportunity for Raptors President and GM, Masai Ujiri, to now build from a position of strength in his retention and recruitment efforts as he formulates his vision for the long term success of the franchise. A step forward. Long way to go though - yet you can start to see the light. 3. KYLE LOWRY: No idea what will happen with him regarding his future with the Raptors. Im hopeful they can work something out. Ill say this though, the man has really impressed me this season. Every day he left everything out there on the floor for you and competed like few players ever have in a Raptors uniform. For that, we should be grateful and impressed at the same time. Hes been a joy to watch this season and an inspiration to so many young players that can learn from his sheer will and effort that you can overcome a whole lot if you give it your all. He came up short but the man is a winner. Fingers crossed it all comes together and hes back in Toronto. 4. MARCUS THORNTON (Nets): In a Game 7, many times you need that guy that just comes out of left field that gets you over the hump particularly when youre the road team.dddddddddddd Give coach Jason Kidd credit, he played a great hunch and it paid off huge dividends for him. His perimeter shooting, creativity, rebounding and overall explosiveness were the edge the Nets sorely needed to pull off the road win in a deciding game. He was lousy in the early part of the series after playing quite well since being acquired from Sacramento but Coach Kidd showed renewed faith in him and was justly rewarded for it. Joe Johnson was the MVP but he was the difference. 5. DWANE CASEY: Actions speak louder than words. Three years and each year his teams have gotten better and he has grown each year as a head coach. As good a coach as he is - and hes a very good one - hes an even better man. Class act. He did an outstanding job this year and when I reflect over the three year period he has been consistent and stayed true to his core beliefs which I truly respect. He led a team this year that had many limitations (as we could all plainly see in this Series) to 48 wins, an Atlantic Division title and came up a bit short to a much more experienced, talented and deeper Nets team. Yes - Were all bitterly disappointed in the loss of this series yet when you take time to reflect, this organization has a true leader who is bright, steady and wont be out-worked by anyone. When I evaluate a coach, I always point to year three as my barometer of where you truly judge them. Theyve had more than enough time to get things the way they want and now you want to see that vision unfold before you. He has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt in my mind that hes more than deserving of being the head coach of the Raptors and when I evaluate him against his peers Im quite impressed. As a former coach, I think I have a pretty decent feel when I compare/contrast coaches strengths/weaknesses and when I look at coach Casey I see a man who has rolled up his sleeves, paid his dues and is truly a right fit for the task of the challenges that lie ahead for the organization. Hes a coachs coach and I can tell you flat out that the men in his profession not only truly like him but all respect him tremendously. Happy for his success. Good man. Good things do truly happen for good people. ' ' '
